a pleasant combination of rocky cliffs and thick forest in southern Illinois. i was lucky to find a very large fallen boulder to climb up on to get above the brush and capture this view.

Below ground caverns in Arizona wilderness, carved out by centuries of flash flood waters from rain many miles away.

this is an extreme closeup shot of a shiny new penny. it is so close, that you're only seeing 0.00001% of the entire coin, or an area about the size of a human hair. the greenish-gold striations are clean portions of the copper, and the bumpy-red patches are corrosion as the coin is just beginning it's process of turning old and brown. a piece of penny the area of this photo, would have a monetary value of one ten-millionth of a dollar (at a very small bank).

Last Day of Winter
appearing as a beautiful iridescent wing from a magical creature, this is actually a small portion of a single grain of black sand. we were exploring a small clump of sand for a good shot, and noticed a tiny colourful spot sparkling out from one of the grains of lava rock. zooming in much more, we discovered this 'wing' shape measuring 0.0058 inches long (equivalent to the thickness of a sheet of paper). the entire grain of sand at this level of magnification, would fill 20 of these photos.

Fairy Wing
This cute little fella was raised on a large pond not too far from the studio. Never more than a few inches from Mom, the adorable youngster was swimming about, getting its share of seaweed from just below the surface. They both tend to stay away from the shore (probably for safety) and I haven't managed to coax them much closer. So this shot was captured through an 800mm lens to bring in the detail and expression of the young bird without disturbing the mom.

Baby Swan
Sunlight reflecting from the pond's surface, was shining up through a lily pad leaf that had grown to a few inches above the water. I loved the way it illuminated the structure of the leaf and it reminded me of modern fractal art (complex patterns generated by mathematical algorithms).
