Pair of Lady's Slippers A short distance from the studio, there is a woods that slopes into a large marsh area. In this area, I commonly find many little things to capture on film. Although I'm in a four-season climate, it is not uncommon for there to be orchids growing in the wild at places like this marshy woods. This type of cypripedium orchid is commonly called "Lady's Slipper" as the bloom shape resembles the footwear.Download: 1024x768 Wallpaper |

Fern Field While hiking through the many woods in the valley, I came across a clearing packed full of ferns. Clearings between the groves of trees were common, but none were like this one. These ferns average five to six feet in height and were nothing short of spectacular. The sunlight filtered through the airy flora creating many layers of green as it progressed toward the shaded ground region.Download: 1024x768 Wallpaper |

First Essence of Spring When one sees these little Eurasian flowers sprouting up in a four season climate, they can be certain that spring is truly on its way. Many times these tiny little Crocuses push their way through the remaining snow to show off their vibrant blooms. Their colour is quite strong amongst the drab remains of winter and is a welcomed site for the area. The trickiest part on capturing these onto film is getting down to their world. Typically being only 70-80mm tall, they are shorter than my lens diameter. So I dug a shallow hole for the body of the camera and laid my Ø95mm macro lens across the ground and then laid myself out behind the whole setup. The ground was, by far, still cold and damp so time in this position was not wasted before capturing such small works of art.Download: 1024x768 Wallpaper |

Bird of Paradise This large Bird-of-Paradise bloom gave me quite a challenge. I was hiking in a tropical rainforest when i saw glimpses of this beautiful bloom. The only trouble was the best side to photograph was rather hidden by thick foliage with no practical way to get closer. I found a peek-hole through the network of leaves, but it was very high, so i stretched the tripod to it's full height and then more so by greatly decreasing it's base to obtain just enough height to peek through this hole in the foliage. Then added a very large zoom lens on top of this very unstable camera setup. After waiting some time for everything to settle down from micro-movements (including not breathing on or near the tripod), i was able to capture this exotic shot.Download: 1024x768 Wallpaper |

Illuminated Lily Sunlight reflecting from the pond's surface, was shining up through a lily pad leaf that had grown to a few inches above the water. I loved the way it illuminated the structure of the leaf and it reminded me of modern fractal art (complex patterns generated by mathematical algorithms).Download: 1024x768 Wallpaper |

Green Alien okay, so this is really myrtle spurge (euphorbia myrsinites) and the first time i saw it, it truly appeared alien to me. It had such an amazing combination of unique shapes and unusual method of branching, that i was certain this was from another world.Download: 1024x768 Wallpaper |

Twins This was part of my "First Essence of Spring" project, when I was capturing the first things to sprout from the cold winter ground. Crocuses are usually the first sign of colour in the area and this lone plant was sprouting two complementary buds. The elongated violet bud stemming next to the taller deep yellow bud reminded me of fraternal twins being born. They were as much alike as they were different.
The trickiest part of capturing these onto film is getting down to their world. Typically being only 70-80mm tall, they are shorter than my lens diameter. So I dug a shallow hole for the body of the camera and laid a macro lens across the ground and then laid myself out behind the whole setup. Ladies Mantle the sun is coming back out and everything is still, peaceful, and wet from this mornings gentle rain. I start wandering around about and see a patch of Ladies Mantle (alchemilla mollis) that was holding an impressive display of leftover raindrops. I circle around, being certain to check each of many plants for the best shape and drip pattern. After a short time, this one wins the photo award for the moment and i set up to capture it on film before the takes it all away.Download: 1024x768 Wallpaper |

Azalea Bloom Azaleas are by far my favorite shrub. In late spring when many things are in full bloom, these brightly coloured shrubs open up and make all other flora less noticeable. Their blooms are so plentiful and of vibrant hot colours like pink, orange, yellow, and coral, they grab your attention for some distance.Download: 1024x768 Wallpaper |

Passiflora he exotic blooms on this particular tropical vine last only a day. After just missing a couple of openings, a gardener friend and I was pulling shifts going to check on it's status twice a day. Finally, late one morning, the magnificent passiflora opened to display it's unparalleled details. Immediately, I load up an excessive amount of gear so that nothing would warrant a second trip and spent several hours more than adequately capturing the moment on film. As the day progressed and the sun started getting low, the entire wonder began to close only to fall off the next day; but on film it lives on.Download: 1024x768 Wallpaper |

Shady Clematis At the local gardens, of which I visit often to enjoy the peaceful surroundings, they have so many things to see, that I typically discover something new on each visit. This time, their clematis was in bloom and the late morning light simply could not be better. These showy purple flowers are fed by a rather thin vine that requires support from other plantlife. In this case, it found its way up a small tree and the dappled light coming through the leaves was sensational. I set up my gear nearby and before becoming mesmerized by the fluttering patterns of light, I squeezed off this shot.Download: 1024x768 Wallpaper |

Pink Petals i've been scouting around for a perfect rose shot - which for anyone whom has tried this, understands the challenge - there's almost always some imperfection or imbalance that keeps one searching for something better. i happen to find these three pink roses in a row and focused on the perfect pattern of soft pink petals on the center bloom.Download: 1024x768 Wallpaper |
